Tradshirts! From Le Blog de la Mirabelle / Mirabelle’s Blog

As Mirabelle puts it: “Here’s a funny shirt you can wear to make your clients realize that their rates are not enough to live on.” A fantastic idea: Tradshirts!

Translators get paid less and less. Most of us have studied at least 4 years, some much longer. We are often specialists in several fields: film, art, literature, tourism…yet we are often offered rates that would translate into a minimum wage if we were salaried.

So here’s our answer: Yes you can find cheap translators but they will have to work 4, 5 times more than decently paid translators. Do you really think you will get quality for that?

You know, you won’t! What is funny is that these same clients perfectly understand that a pair of trousers for 15€ will last one summer (if they are lucky).

How can companies, who’ve spent loads of money in advertisement, ruin their reputation with low quality translations? Would you buy a camera from a website written in mumbo-jumbo? I wouldn’t and I didn’t.

So here’s a funny shirt you can wear to make that statement and to make your clients realize that their rates are not enough to live on. Do we deserve less than other specialized workers?

    I would prefer a T-shirt that says: “I’m a translator, I can’t even pay a cleaning lady”.
